Waller's other Cox Plate hope
Chris Waller

Trainer Chris Waller says new import Trinity College could emerge as a Cox Plate contender alongside defending champion Via Sistina, but has urged patience with the rising four-year-old.

The former Aidan O’Brien-trained galloper, recently purchased by Yulong, is due to join Waller’s stable within the next month. Trinity College boasts strong European form, highlighted by a 3.5-length victory in the G3 Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot before finishing runner-up as favourite in the G1 Prix de Paris at Longchamp.

“He’s good enough to win a Cox Plate,” Waller said. “He’s probably good enough to win a Caulfield Cup, and it’s just a matter of whether it’s this year or next. What I’ve learned about imports is to let them show their ability, rather than forcing them to.”

Trinity College is currently rated a $17 chance in Caulfield Cup markets and $26 for the Cox Plate.
