Punters in pubs and clubs are about to get the ability to bet on live sport and racing.

According to the Australian Financial Review’s Zoe Samios,Tabcorp has been given permission by the Victorian gambling regulator to roll out live betting devices in pubs and clubs.

The product is expected to be called TAB Live.

According to the report, the tech will involve using a puck-like unit that allows punters to tap their phones and place bets during live sport and racing.

The report noted the installations to begin in pubs and clubs across NSW and Victoria, where the company has access to around 650 venues, within months.

Tabcorp holds retail agreements with about 3700 pubs and clubs nationwide across Australia.

CEO Gil McLachlan has set his sights on improving the retail performance of TAB given their investment in the space and challenges online wagering has provided.

McLachlan remains determined, Betsy is told, to dramatically improve their retail returns as well as their efficiencies in the media space too.

According to the AFR, McLachlan personally presented to regulators as part of the approval process and told venue operators last week.

“We are putting retail at the heart of everything we do strategically, the numbers are changing and showing that,” he said.

The new devices come with the support of the regulators who say the devices come with greater controls than existing live betting.
