Maher snares UK jockey

British-based jockey Richard Farragher has announced his decision to relocate to Australia, citing rising living costs and dwindling racing opportunities in the UK as key reasons behind the move.

The 25-year-old will join the Sydney operation of leading trainer Ciaron Maher under a 12-month working visa, marking a significant career shift after a challenging season in Britain. Farragher, who notched 43 wins last year, saw his tally drop to just 14 in 2025 after losing his apprentice claim.

“I’m 25 now, which I think is the perfect age,” Farragher told the Racing Post. “I have enough race-riding and life experience to make the move. I have no ties and felt I’d regret not giving it a go.”

Originally from Ireland, where he rode 20 winners before moving to the UK in 2021, Farragher previously gained experience in Australia during a trip with William Haggas' Dubai Honour in 2023. That stint, he says, left a lasting impression.

“Since I went to Australia with Dubai Honour, it’s been in the back of my mind. Racing seemed in a really good place down there.”

He added that the financial strain of being a journeyman jockey in the UK had become unsustainable. “If you’re one of the top lads it’s fine, but for the rest of us, it’s not viable anymore.”

Farragher is set to begin his Australian chapter next month, hopeful that hard work and opportunity will revive his career.
