Star jockey Declan Bates faces a long stint on the sidelines after a nasty fall on Monday.

The Victorian Jockey's Association confirmed on Monday that Bates fell at Ballarat jumpouts and was transported to hospital after complaining of back soreness.

The VJA confirmed on Tuesday that Bates has a fracture to his pelvis and sacrum [a large bone at the bottom of the spine].

He also has a possible fracture to his T4 in his spine but at this stage does not require surgery.

Bates is best known for his work with former racehorse of the year, Pride of Jenni.

Bates won another Group 1 on the mare in 2025 after being removed as her rider following some disappointing results. The Ciaron Maher 8 year old was also briefly retired.

Pride of Jenni won the Empire Rose Stakes on Derby Day.

“She was retired, I was sacked, and that was all good, everyone was OK, but to be standing here, winning another Group 1 is making me emotional,” Bates said.

Look at her go 🙌
