Track Pattern Outlook
- Randwick Rail Tue – History suggests lanes 1–4 in the straight are inferior, with lanes 4–8 likely to become key as the day progresses.
- With a month between meetings, and given the heavy conditions, on-speed runners positioned off the rails should hold a clear advantage
Key Randwick Stats
- Apprentice Anna Roper has burst onto the scene. Over the past 365 days, the 2kg claimer is striking at 22.7% with a healthy +19.0% POT.
- Two stables to follow: over the past 90 days, O’Shea & Charlton are striking at 23.9% with a +23.8% POT, while Joseph Pride has his camp humming at 19.7% SR and +17% POT.
Overview
Race 1
Group 1 racing is back, and we open the Winx Stakes program with a sharp Midway. (5) SIGNOR TORTONI is the fit and in-form runner, and while well held last start, the winner Glory Moments looks a Group horse in waiting — so the run was better than it reads. The danger is (8) DIVINE BENE, who produced a career peak last time on a sloppy Newcastle track, though note he’s dual-accepted. (2) AGAINST THE LAW is flying for Bryce Heys and is versatile enough to give himself every chance.
Suggested Bet – No Bet
Race 2
Highways are always tricky, and this one is no exception. I’m happy to take on (2) EXIT FEE and (8) XCESSIVE FORCE at the current odds — both are hopes, but under the price for mine. (14) BRIDAL ROSE gets the nod; she’s fit, handles wet ground, and the soft draw is the cherry on top. Watch for (8) REBEL DEAN, who was sneaky good last start in midweek grade and looks right up to this with the claim.
Suggested Bet – No Bet
Race 3
The best bet of the program. (1) JUJU KIBO simply skipped through the wet last start like he’s skipping through the grades. He was the only horse all day to win from off speed, which says plenty about his merit. With added fitness, he looks perfectly placed in benchmark grade. (5) BLUESTONE brings Victorian form and is fit, but must prove himself on heavy. Old boy (9) WUDZZ loves the slop and can add value running a cheeky race.
Suggested Bet – Juju Kibo (Win)
Race 4
Plenty of chances in a tricky affair. I’ve gone the way of (2) KERGUELEN, who arrives race-fit, first-up for Pride, and brings the on-speed, wet-track profile you want here. (7) LUGH is a lightly raced galloper with upside, but he’ll need to prove himself again on the Heavy 10. (9) BOLTSAVER is another proven wet-tracker who just needs luck from the inside draw. (11) WINSTON HILL is better saved for a drier surface.
Suggested Bet – No Bet
Race 5 – G3 Premier’s Cup
Impressive last start from (2) SALTCOATS — yes, he got the perfect run in the fast lanes, but he absolutely put them away and looks one of the more progressive horses going around. (7) NELLIE LAYLAX is the danger; in a race lacking tempo she could control things up front and pinch it, heavy ground no issue. (9) HASTY HONEY has been well backed again and has the tactical speed to feature, while (10) GOOD BANTER is next best.
Suggested Bet – No Bet
Race 6 – G2 Silver Shadow
The new-season fillies step out in style. (4) AGARWOOD was a late-season star, winning impressively back-to-back before measuring up in the JJ Atkins. Crucially, she’s already shown she handles the heavy. (3) SAVVY HALLIE has the race fitness, mixing it with quality horses like Nepotism on wet ground, and looms as the danger. (1) WITHIN THE LAW might turn out the best of them, but one short trial into a heavy track first-up looks a risk.
Suggested Bet – Agarwood (Win)
Race 7 – G3 Toy Show
The excitement is around (4) AUTUMN GLOW, unbeaten and trialling like a rocket, though the heavy track remains the query. If she gets through it, she could be something special. If not, (3) MANAAL looks primed after two sharp trials and will be there to pick up the pieces. (7) CIGAR FLICK might not have the sheer class of the top pair, but she’s rock-hard fit and has a wet-track record that makes her a player.
Suggested Bet – No Bet
Race 8 – G1 Winx Stakes
The feature of the day. (9) VIA SISTINA is a deserved favourite, but $2.40 with a heavy-track query is short enough to risk. The bet looks (3) GRINGOTTS — dynamic fresh, loves 1400m, and should relish the conditions. He maps beautifully just off speed and will be the one to run down. (12) AELIANA has trialled superbly but risks being buried from the inside gate. (2) CEOLWULF didn’t fire in the autumn but has trialled well enough to suggest he’s ready to bounce back first-up.
Suggested Bet – Gringotts (Win)
Race 9 – G3 Show County
Leaning to (6) CORNICHE, who was terrific first-up, savaging the line in fast closing sectionals. He’s a better horse second-up, loves the wet, and maps ideally just behind the speed. (5) GENERAL SALUTE is all class but could give away too big a start in the going. (1) YELLOW BRICK has the weight but also the fitness and wet-track form to give a sight. (8) ROMEO’S CHOICE keeps progressing and will enjoy conditions, while (4) LAZZURA adds X-factor fresh.
Suggested Bet – Corniche (Each Way)
Race 10
A wide-open finale with no shortage of last-start winners. (13) SEVEN’S caught the eye first-up with a dominant win and looks a more complete horse this prep. (14) ISLAND DREAM launched second-up into form and her wet-track profile screams contender. (12) MORNINGTON PIER has flourished since joining the Doyle stable and comes off back-to-back wins plus a sharp trial. Another one to keep safe is (13) NARBOLD, a progressive type who’s deep in his prep and holding form.
