Betsy's Bolters - Finding diamonds in the rough

Forget the favourites. We’re digging in the rough, unearthing the runners that can turn small stakes into serious treasure.

Favourites win plenty of races. But the real thrill, and often the real value, lies in finding the one the market hasn’t fully caught up with.

Betsy’s Bolters, proudly supported by Unibet, is our weekly search for punting gold. We dive deep into the replays, sectionals and market profiles to uncover runners flying under the radar, horses sitting at double-figure odds but with far more upside than their price suggests.

These aren’t wild darts. They’re calculated swings at big prices.

All odds are courtesy of Unibet (correct as at 28/03/26 at 8am).

Rosehill - Dean Watling

Race 9 No.2 Globe ($15)

Top tip is the favourite Sepals, but Globe is the danger after resenting the firm deck fresh and now gets his preferred cut in the ground second-up.

Morphettville - Mitch Lewis

Race 9 No.1 Freedom Flame ($16)

Giving (1) Freedom Flame a strong chance in this set-up. She is third-up and at peak fitness but, importantly, gets to the 1600m trip which should be ideal for her now. She maps well so looks likely to settle in a prominent position as well.

Race 10 No.3 Synchro

Open race to finish the program. There does not look to be much speed in the race, which could see (3) Synchro get a soft run out in front. He is first-up into this and has won first-up before, so could take catching.

Flemington - Will Elford

Race 7 No.8 Steel Run ($16)

Flemington - Matt Welsh

Race 8 No.7 Mark Twain ($26)

Gee, (7) Mark Twain seems a big price. He had his first start for the Phillip Stokes stable in the Blamey last time out and he was outstanding from the tail, beaten by a narrowing 2.85 lengths by Birdman. Won the Roy Higgins this day last year but he certainly looks sharper this year. Drawn ideally to get a soft smother.

Race 10 No.4 Land Legend ($31)

If he’s recovered from his barbequing in the Melbourne Cup then (4) Land Legend looks over the odds. Awesome trial at Cranbourne. Best run of the prep last time in was first up at 1400m when arguably should’ve won. Drawn out but will likely drift off speed anyway and there looks a good tempo up front. Worth a bet each-way at a big price.
